Are MediaTek Chipsets Getting More Developer-Friendly?

It’s no secret that MediaTek has been the world’s largest chip manufacturer for a while now, purely because of the abundance of devices that their chips are used in. Seriously though. Be it smartphones, chromebook, smart speakers, televisions etc, you can find them everywhere.

So it should come as no surprise that the semiconductor giant wants to move on to the next step in the industry. They recently announced the ‘Open Resource Architecture’ by MediaTek which will allow OEMs launching phones with its flagship Dimensity 1200 SoC to customise camera, display and other relevant resources from the ground-up.

They can add a number of multimedia features, changing the game in terms of photography and videography, give a much more streamlined performance and basically tailor the devices to complement a variety of consumer lifestyles.

This is huge news for smartphone brands and us, end-consumers, alike. What this basically means is that it gives OEMs the ability to bake their custom algorithms directly at the chip level, therefore essentially operating the Dimensity 1200 SoC like their own tech stack of sorts.

What happened earlier was that any changes or upgrades that brands wanted to make would usually get added on top of what the MediaTek chip would already offer. This would result in the brands not being able to employ the exact feature that they aimed for. Now, with the open resource architecture, they can use their own custom calibrations and algorithms to define exactly how they want their phone’s display colours to look like.

This translates to better control over features of a phone. For example, Apple has the best processors because it gets micro control over every single aspect of its iPhones. Thus it can easily integrate its software and hardware and get the most out of the chip. Samsung does something similar although they have started to use MediaTek chipsets as well.

All in all, this is a good move for Mediatek and for the OEMs as well. It is predicted that the new smartphones with the customizable chips will be released in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed.
