Does the MediaTek Helio G85 support PUBG Mobile?

The Helio G series still remains a good option for gaming smartphones

Games like PUBG require a smartphone with a processor that can take on the load of a heavy game, has a quick refresh rate, and is able to multitask with no hiccups. All of it is only possible if you buy a phone with a power-packed processor. MediaTek’s Helio G85 is one such processor that ticks all these boxes and allows you to do all of these things, and at the same time, you don’t have to spend a bomb on it. I’m a frequent mobile gamer and while PUBG isn’t available in India anymore, I mostly play Apex Legends and COD these days and my Redmi Note 9 hasn’t given me any problems so far.

To understand how the Helio G85 does this is to understand a little bit more about its features. This chip is a part of the Helio G-series which has always marketed itself primarily as a gaming processor and it was an upgrade from the Helio G80 chipset. The newer chip clocks at a higher GPU and is targeted at mid-range gaming devices.

Let’s get a little technical for a bit. The Helio G85 comes with a 64-bit Octa-core chipset which has two performance cores: ARM Cortex-A75 and six power-efficient core Cortex-A55 CPUs which clocked at 2.0GHz and 1.8GHz. It also has one of the fastest GPUs, clocked at 1GHz. The display comes at Full HD+ with a 2520x1080p resolution and a refresh rate of 60Hz which is a bit on the lower side but effective nonetheless.

Smartphones that come embedded with the Helio G85 have pretty good cameras as the processor supports up to 48MP and multiple camera arrays such as telephoto, macro, and wide-angle lenses. And that’s not all, it can even support AI face unlock, multi-frame noise reduction, and smart photo albums. On the connectivity front, the device supports Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, VoLTE, 4G, Dual SIM, GPS, etc.

Just like the rest of the G-series chipsets, the Helio G85 comes with MediaTek’s HyperEngine technology which is essential in faster responses, better connectivity, dynamic management of CPU and GPU, predicting Wi-Fi latency issues, etc. The Redmi Note 9, especially, comes with at least a 21% improvement compared to its last model, the Note 8 (powered by Snapdragon 665), with an impressive AnTuTu benchmark score of 2,05,946.

One can expect to play a range of different heavy games like PUBG and others on MediaTek-powered Helio G series chipsets, especially the Helio G85. I’ve also heard great reviews about the new Realme Narzo 20 which also has the same Helio G85 processor. In fact, it may be even better than the Redmi Note 9 in terms of graphics and general gameplay.

So, in my opinion, purchasing smartphones with this processor is definitely a good buy if you’re looking for something that supports heavy gaming but at the same time is a breeze to use on a daily basis.
